How Well Do You Really Know Someone?

It's funny.  You get to know someone.  You become close to them.  You spend every day with them, for large portions of the day.  You share what you're thinking and feeling with them.  Then one day, they decide they don't want to be around you any more.  They dump you for someone more popular, prettier, smarter, different.  You have no idea why.  You knew them.  You felt so close.  You knew they loved you.  Until they didn't.  Years later, you see them post on Facebook.  They like things you know they never liked.  They are excited that their children are doing things they hate - you're sure of it.    Sounds like most of our clients here in the Trenches, doesn't it?  Many of them dated their spouses for years.  They lived together for decades.  They raised children together.  They shared their hopes and dreams.  Then one day, one of them decided it was over.  They move on to do things their spouse thought they would never do, be friends with people they would never have liked, get involved in causes they detested.  They changed.  Or did they?  By the way, the first part of this post had nothing to do with marriage and everything to do with high school.  Funny how all types of relationships mimic each other, isn't it?  Here in the Trenches.
